Do You Need an ATEX Certified Freezer?
| ATEX Zone 2, Category 3 Certified (Internal Cavity) The internal cavity of the ATEX Certified unit is certified in accordance with ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU for use in Zone 2, Category 3 environments. This means it is suitable for areas where explosive atmospheres are unlikely during normal operation but may occur briefly and infrequently. All external components are classified as being in a nonhazardous (safe) area and therefore do not require ATEX compliance. |
Both models are designed to be spark-free, but the ATEX version has been independently certified for use in environments where explosive vapours could occasionally be present. This makes it suitable for specialist laboratories and facilities that handle flammable substances such as ethanol, acetone or formalin.
For most medical, healthcare, and educational settings, the standard spark-free freezer is more than adequate. If your organisation’s risk assessment or safety policy specifies ATEX equipment, or if you store volatile chemicals, you should choose the ATEX certified model.
